TRACY -- Residents can get free daily phone calls to check on their welfare.
The Tracy Police Department has announced the return of its "Are You OK," telephone reassurance program for senior citizens, to kick-off National Older Americans Month. The program focuses on seniors who are disabled or living alone. Seniors may register for a daily computer-generated call to confirm they are not in need of assistance and that they are in fact "OK."
The individual provides the time of the call and an emergency contact number. If the call is unanswered by the second attempt, police will be notified to check on the individual.
Chief Gary Hampton said the program began in 1999 but died due to lack of interest. With the relaunch this month, the police department has partnered with senior advocacy groups to help spread the word.
