LIVERMORE -- As America observes Memorial Day, Tri-Valley residents will honor servicemen and women who gave their lives for their country with a variety of events and observances on Sunday and Monday.
In Livermore on Memorial Day, American Legion Post 47 will host a flag-raising ceremony at the west end of Roselawn Cemetery at 1204 N. Livermore Ave. The American flag will be raised to half-staff at 9 a.m., full-staff at noon, and retired at 4:30 p.m.
Ceremonies will be held with the Livermore Valley VFW Post 7265 at Roselawn starting at 10 a.m., at Memory Gardens Cemetery on East Avenue at 11 a.m., and at St. Michael's Cemetery at noon. At each ceremony, Boy Scouts will play Taps on bugles, followed by guest speakers and the placing of wreaths on gravesites.
Danville's annual Memorial Day celebration will once again be held at Oak Hill Park, 3005 Stone Valley Rd., organized by the Viet Nam Veterans of Diablo Valley. Attendees will enjoy live patriotic music and a ceremony with guest speakers -- including Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Maj. Jon Cavaiani -- as well as tributes to Tri-Valley service members who have died.
Seating begins at 10 a.m., followed by the program at 11 a.m. and a flyover of a P-51 Mustang fighter and Vietnam-era UH-1 "Huey" helicopter. Attendees are invited to bring a picnic lunch.
Pleasanton's annual Memorial Day observance will be held Monday at the Pleasanton Senior Center, at 5353 Sunol Blvd. The event, hosted by American Legion Post 237 and Pleasanton VFW Post 6298, takes place in the garden area on the center's south side. There will be a musical interlude by the Pleasanton Community Band at 10:30 a.m.
The program starts at 11 a.m. The keynote speaker will be Maj. Gen. David Baldwin, the commanding general of the California National Guard. After the ceremony, a free barbecue will be held at the Veterans Memorial Building at 301 Main St. in downtown Pleasanton.
In San Ramon, the long-running Art and Wind Festival returns May 26 & 27 from 10 a.m.to 5 p.m. daily at San Ramon Central Park, 12501 Alcosta Blvd. The free festival features arts & crafts, food, three stages of entertainment and a special early-morning hot-air balloon launch on Memorial Day beginning at 6 a.m. The two-day festival includes helicopter landings by Cal Star on Sunday and Monday at noon, and the Coast Guard on Sunday at 1 p.m. A special flag ceremony and presentation to remember veterans -- with music and remarks by local dignitaries -- takes place on the main stage on Memorial Day at 11:30 a.m.
