Doreen Monroe loves golf, and she is hoping that her favorite sport will bring some much-needed funds to a terminally ill friend.
Joy White, of Brentwood, is a cancer patient. Monroe met her last year when she sold White a house and the two became friends.
"Her goal was to make sure the kids were somewhere safe and secure before she passes," she said. "I'm so happy she's been able to accomplish her goal," Monroe said.
White, 38, is mother to 6-year-old Isabella, a first-grader at Garin Elementary, and her brother Logan, 4.
She was first diagnosed in her 20s and was cancer-free for several years. She remarried and was given the go-ahead to have children. But, the cancer was hormone-induced and returned "with a vengeance" once she had her babies, spreading to her lungs, bones and, most recently, her brain. Monroe said.
The Antioch resident said she can't fathom White's situation.
"I can only imagine what she must be feeling, and it rips my heart apart (to think) about her kids. They do not know how sick their mom is."
Monroe is anxious to spread the word to get help to her friend. For the past few months, she has spearheaded a fundraiser that culminates with a golf tournament June 29. She said planning for the event is going well and right on track, with some nice community support.
"This has been one of the most rewarding events I had the opportunity to be involved with," she said. "I'm anxious and excited for Joy and her family. They are going to be quite surprised by the overwhelming amount of support. It truly has been a very humbling experience."
Cost for dinner and a round of golf at Lone Tree Golf in Antioch is $100, or $40 for dinner only. The event also includes awards and raffle prizes.

"I would love to present her with a big check for those beautiful kids' trust account," Monroe said.
