MARTINEZ -- A Highway 4 overcrossing will be dedicated to slain Martinez police Sgt. Paul Starzyk next month.
The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m., July 1 at the Pine Street overcrossing. Attendees are invited to a reception following the dedication at Grace Episcopal Church, 130 Muir Station Road.
On behalf of the Martinez Police Department, state Sen. Mark DeSaulnier in 2011 sponsored a resolution to name the Pine Street overcrossing "Police Sergeant Paul Starzyk Memorial Overcrossing" in memory of the 12-year veteran killed in the line of duty five years ago.
Starzyk and Catalina Torres were shot to death Sept. 6, 2008 by a gunman who burst into a Martinez beauty salon at Pacheco Boulevard and Morello Avenue looking for his estranged wife. Although he had been mortally wounded, Starzyk shot and killed the assailant.
