DANVILLE -- A conservation group has succeeded in raising $100,000 in contributions to restore a historic Mount Diablo beacon lighted up after sunset every Pearl Harbor Day.
Many individuals and businesses contributed, with the goal met by a $10,000 gift from the Chevron oil company. Chevron had the beacon installed in 1928 when the company was known as Standard Oil.
"The scope and magnitude of the response to the beacon restoration effort have been overwhelming," said Ron Brown, executive director of Save Mount Diablo.
The group plans to finish the volunteer restoration in time for the annual Dec. 7 lighting of the beacon on the 3,849-foot-tall mountain. The Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation provided $50,000 in matching funds for the project.
