PITTSBURG -- Fireworks are fun, especially when there is a family-friendly festival where people can relax before the big event.
That will be the case this Fourth of July in Pittsburg, thanks to a fundraising effort by the Old Town Pittsburg Business District Association that is sponsoring the festival before the fireworks commence when it gets dark.
After the city announced in May that it would be putting on a fireworks show after a two-year absence, the association had almost $5,000 in donations on hand that were originally collected to support a fireworks show in Pittsburg.
Those donations will now be used to host the free festival that will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Pittsburg Marina. The event will feature carnival-type games such as a pie toss and dunk tank and activities for children. Food and beverage vendors will be on hand at the alchohol-free event.
"We are very fortunate that we are able to use the money we raised to host this event. Our hopes are that it will become an annual festival that gets larger every year. It's going to be a lot of fun," Adrian Badger, association president, said.
Having the festival will also provide people with an opportunity to get to the Pittsburg Marina and relax before the fireworks begin.
"It will give them the opportunity to arrive a little bit early for the fireworks so they can settle in and not everyone is coming at the last minute," Badger said.
The funding for this year's fireworks show is made possible from existing city fees charged to waterfront tenants that include Dow Chemical, USS-POSC0 and NRG Energy.
