MARTINEZ -- Jury deliberations began Monday at the dual trial for two men accused of participating in the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl on the Richmond High School campus in 2009.
Marcelles Peter, 20, of Pinole, and Jose Montano, 22, of Richmond, each face life in prison if they are convicted as charged with gang rape, forced oral copulation in concert, and sexual penetration in concert. Two other men have already been convicted of gang rape in the case; another two are awaiting trial on lesser sexual assault charges.
The juries heard from about 30 witnesses over six weeks about the Oct. 24, 2009, attack in which authorities say the girl was assaulted for more than two hours in a dark campus courtyard after leaving a homecoming dance and drinking with a group of males.
The victim testified that she does not remember the attack; a doctor testified she nearly died that night of alcohol poisoning, head trauma and hypothermia.
Peter's jury began deliberating late Monday morning. Montano's jury went out late Monday afternoon. The juries were instructed to consider convicting the defendants of lesser offenses.
