MLK Celebration/Oratorical Festival: San Leandro is hosting an oratorical festival at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 11 a.m. Monday, at Marina Community Center, 15301 Wicks Blvd. Student contestants will perform an original or well-known essay, speech or poem in celebration of King's message of peace, tolerance and social justice. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Cleanup: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 25, individual volunteers, families, student and service groups are welcome to join in helping the Friends of San Leandro Creek at Root Park, at East 14th St. and Hays St. Wear sturdy shoes, long pants and sleeves, mosquito repellent, and bring gloves. Participants are required to fill out a waiver form. Children under 14 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Friends of San Leandro Creek will certify volunteer hours for community services.
