BERKELEY -- For the second time in four days, the De La Salle High basketball team dropped a heartbreaker.
The Spartans led for much of the fourth quarter, but lost in overtime to perennial state power Long Beach Poly 44-42 at the MLK Classic at Haas Pavilion on Monday.
In a game in which neither team led by more than five points, the battle-tested Jackrabbits made fewer mistakes down the stretch and were better at the free throw line.
Ke'Jhan Feagin hit a 3-pointer on Poly's first possession of overtime, leaving De La Salle to play catch up the rest of the way. Kameron Murrell made three of four free throws in the final 30 seconds to hold off the young Spartans, who were coming off a 41-38 loss to rival Monte Vista on Friday.
De La Salle (10-5), which starts three sophomores, now must regroup for another challenging game at San Ramon Valley on Tuesday.
The Spartans led 31-27 heading into the final period and later pushed their lead to five points on a Nikhil Peters 3-pointer. But Poly (14-6) got its comeback started at the free throw line and tied the game at 34 on a fastbreak layup by Feagin.
Devin Asiasi's layup gave the Spartans the lead back with 2:20 to play, but they didn't score again in regulation.
Poly was also held scoreless in the final two minutes, though each team had its chance at a game-winning shot.
Poly had its chance taken away by Peters, whose steal gave De La Salle the ball with 3.1 seconds on the clock. But Feagin then denied the Spartans, blocking Peter's 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Missed free throws also doomed the Spartans, who missed six of their final eight shots from the line. Four of those misses came in overtime.
Peters led De La Salle with 13 points and six rebounds. Another sophomore, Asiasi, added nine points and six rebounds.
Chris Sullivan and Feagin each had 13 points to lead Poly.
