HERCULES -- A 17-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly burglarizing his neighbors' homes in Hercules, authorities said.

The boy is facing five counts of first-degree residential burglary, and police are investigating whether he was involved in more break-ins at homes in the "Birds," a common reference to the neighborhood because of street names like Tanager and Partridge.

A dozen homes within a six-block radius have been burglarized since Nov. 7, with four occurring last week, police said. On Feb. 21 at 7:56 a.m., a neighbor reported seeing a teenager running from inside a house on the 2000 block of Pheasant Drive toward Crane Court, police said. Based the description, officers believed the burglar to be a teenager who lived about two blocks away.

Officers went to his home and with his mother's permission searched the residence and found stolen property from nearby homes and a burglary in Oakland. Police are investigating whether the teenager is responsible for additional burglaries in the area.
