The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday it will offer free sandbags to residents of the county's unincorporated areas, throughout the rainy season.

Residents must provide their own shovel and transportation, Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said. The sandbags are available around the clock, seven days a week, at five locations:

  • Antioch: Contra Costa County Fairgrounds, 1201 West 10th Street. Entrance is off 10th Street.

  • Bay Point: Ambrose Park and Recreation Center, 3105 Willow Pass Road. The sand and bags are in a container at the sand cradle on the west side of the parking lot next to a tree approximately three-quarters of the way to the playing fields.

  • Byron: Byron Airport, 500 Eagle Court, Byron. The sand and bags are in a plastic bin next to the flagpole across from the main administration portable building.

  • Pacheco: Waterbird Way, across from the County gas pumps. The sand and bags are in a container at the sand cradle.

  • Richmond: West County Detention Facility, 5555 Giant Highway. Lee says to use the south entrance and drive along toward where Sheriff's Office police vehicles are parked to find the sand; bags are in a green recycling bin.
