DANVILLE -- Senior point guard Jerry Karczewski scored a game-high 29 points and made five straight free throws in the final minute as the host San Ramon Valley High boys basketball team held off a gallant rally by Pittsburg to earn a 78-72 win Friday and move into the North Coast Section Division I semifinals.

The 10th-seeded Pirates trailed 39-19 late in the second quarter before using a 12-0 run late in the final two minutes of the first half to climb back into the game. Pittsburg then stunned the No. 2 Wolves (23-4) with an 11-4 run late in the final quarter and went ahead 70-69 with 1:13 left on D.J. Kennedy's old-fashioned 3-point play off a layup.

But Karczewski nailed three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt to regain the lead, then canned two more two possessions later to seal the win.

David Gunn scored 16 points and Austin Henderson added 15 for the Wolves. Gregg Polosky added nine rebounds.

Kennedy led Pittsburg with 27 points, and Daniel Gonzales added 16.

San Ramon Valley made 12 3-pointers, with Karczewski canning six of them. He made three straight in the first quarter as San Ramon Valley raced to a 26-10 lead.
