MORAGA -- The top-seeded Carondelet High basketball team dominated from the opening possession Saturday to win its third straight North Coast Section Division II title, beating Clayton Valley Charter 100-48 at McKeon Pavilion at Saint Mary's College.

Makenzie Cast completed a three-point play just 12 seconds into the game, and the Cougars (27-3) had a 17-2 lead less than four minutes into the first quarter. Carondelet's Christina Chenault scored 12 of her game-high 22 points in the first quarter, which ended with a 32-4 Carondelet advantage.

"I never realize how much I score. I'm thinking of the next play the whole time," said Chenault, who scored all of her points in the first three quarters. The junior also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

The Cougars' defense was also stifling in the first half, as it allowed No. 3 seed Clayton Valley Charter (23-7) only seven field goals in the first 16 minutes.

Carondelet had a 55-17 halftime lead and an 89-44 advantage after three quarters. Twelve players scored for the Cougars in the game.

Natalie Romeo produced 21 points, all in the first three quarters, and had seven assists.

"We were just all really excited playing on the (Saint Mary's College) court," said Romeo about her team's fast start. "We like playing on big courts."

Cast also passed for seven assists, as the Cougars consistently found the open player for baskets. She scored all 15 of her points in the first three quarters, including five of Carondelet's first nine points in the game.

Kayla Taylor produced a team-high 16 points for Clayton Valley Charter, and also grabbed seven rebounds and passed for five assists. Teammate Sarah Williams added 15 points.

Now Carondelet looks on to CIF Northern California regional play, where it will most likely be selected on Sunday to compete in the Open Division.

"We are prepared for the Open Division," Carondelet coach Margaret Gartner said.
