SAN JOSE -- The host Bellarmine Prep boys basketball team jumped out to a big lead, then got a huge 3-pointer and a steal from Dylan Tarpening late to earn a 51-48 win over Fremont-Oakland on Wednesday in the first round of the CIF Northern regional playoffs.

The Bells (13-16) play at No. 1 Monte Vista on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Fremont (13-14) took its first lead of the game when Edward McGowan scored on a layup and Donnell Wheat added a short jumper as the Tigers went ahead 46-43 with 1:47 to play. Tarpening nailed a 3-pointer to tie the score for Bellarmine, but Kaelin Mixon was good inside the paint to give Fremont the lead back with 41 seconds left.

Tarpening, though, hit another 3-pointer from the corner for a 49-48 Bells lead with 21 seconds left.

After the Tigers worked the clock down, Tarpening stepped in front of a pass and ran the clock down before dishing the ball to Amador Nazarov for an uncontested dunk as time expired.

Nazarov had a huge second half, scoring 12 of his 16 points after intermission. He finished with 11 rebounds.

Wheat led the Tigers with 19 points, including 12 in the final quarter.

The Bells looked as if they would run away with it early, scoring the first 11 points. But the Tigers responded with 10 unanswered to pull within 15-12 early in the second quarter.
