DANVILLE -- Jerry Karczewski scored 10 of the Wolves' 12 points in the fourth quarter, including the final five on free throws as the host San Ramon Valley boys basketball team escaped with a 56-55 win over upset-minded Kennedy-Sacramento on Wednesday in the first round of the CIF Division I Northern regional playoffs.

Karczewski made all but one free throw after going to the line in a one-and-one bonus situation three times in the final 1:10.

All of them came after Colin Uda's back-door layup put Kennedy ahead 55-51 and capped 16-7 run.

After Karczewski made two to tie the game 55-55, the Cougars' Matt Nakatomi missed from the wing on an ill-advised shot with 28 seconds left and the shot clock off.

Nakatomi then fouled Karczewski on the other end. After missing the first free throw, Karczewski barely rippled the nets with the second one with 9.2 seconds left

Karczewski finished with 18 points, and his 3-pointer from a foot behind the arc tied the game 51-51. Joey Healow made two free throws and Uda followed with his layup to set up Karczewski's late heroics.

David Gunn had 21 points and 10 rebounds for San Ramon Valley (24-5). Gregg Polosky added five points and eight rebounds.

Uda scored 16 points, and Nakatomi added 15 for the Cougars (21-10).

The Wolves next face the winner of the Merced-McClymonds game in the second round.
