DANVILLE -- Spencer Rust scored 18 points and Trevor John added 14 as the top-seeded Monte Vista High boys basketball team continued its drive to its first Northern California championship.

The Mustangs (30-1) had problems early with the upstart Bells (12-17), who led 13-10 after the first five minutes of this Division I playoff game. But after Rust scored on a layup to tie the game at 13, the Mustangs' Grant Jackson helped swing the momentum in Monte Vista's favor in the last 10 seconds of the quarter. He hit Rust with a long pass for a layup, then fed Stefan Mitu for a buzzer-beating 3-pointer and an 18-13 lead.

Bellarmine had kept pressure on Monte Vista early with 3-pointers from Masa Swain, Max Le and Kyle Owens, and kept firing from outside the arc for the rest of the first half. But the Bells did not get another trey to fall until Tony Crema hit one three minutes into the third quarter. All that did was cut Monte Vista's lead to 45-25.

The Mustangs broke things open with an 11-0 run in the final 2:55 of the first half, expanding their lead to 37-18.

"They played great in the first part of the first quarter, but the last 10 seconds of the quarter really change the momentum," Bellarmine coach Patrick Schneider said.

Dylan Tarpening led the Bells with 10 points.
