CONCORD -- Police late Monday arrested a suspect in the hit-and-run death of a homeless woman in the downtown area Sunday night.
Yolanda Tiscareno, 46, was walking on a sidewalk on Willow Pass Road near N. Fifth Street about 11:45 p.m. when she was hit and killed by a pickup truck that ran off the road, according to police. She appears to have died instantly, Concord police Sgt. Ken Carlson said.
Tiscareno was known to frequent Martinez, Pacheco and Bay Point, according to Doug Stewart of Central County Homeless Outreach, who said he had known her for about seven years. Stewart said he last saw her in Concord about a week and a half ago.
"She had her problems, but she was always trying to turn the corner and get off the streets," Stewart said. "She never bothered anybody. She stayed with her own group.
"We want to urge anyone that was anywhere near (the scene) or saw anything to call the Concord Police Department. It's really sad for me."
Concord police confirmed late Monday they had arrested Tyler Neal Larson, 29, of Antioch in connection with the case. The suspect vehicle was described as a black pickup truck with major front-end damage, police said.
It was not known what caused the truck to run off the road, police said. Willow Pass Road was closed in the eastbound direction between North Fifth and North Sixth streets until about 6:15 a.m.
Anyone with information is urged to call police at 925-603-5931.
