SAN RAMON -- Former shoppers of the now-shuttered Lucky Supermarket off Crow Canyon Road will soon have a new food store to hunt for groceries at: Sprouts Farmers Market will open in its place June 4.
The natural food retailer known for selling fresh produce, fresh-baked goods and natural, organic, gluten-free and vitamin products, will move in at 3181 Crow Canyon Place.
The new store will take up about half of the former Lucky's space, said Leigh Boyd, the city's economic development consultant. Lucky's closed last September after 33 years due to declining sales.
"As a city, we're very excited," Boyd said. "We were sad to see Lucky's close, but we're excited to see another grocery store now come in to meet the needs in the city of San Ramon."
The city already has a number of grocery stores, among them a Lucky's, a couple of Safeways, a Walmart Neighborhood Market and a Whole Foods Market, which is located at the Shops of Bishop Ranch, Boyd explained.
Yet Sprouts differs from the competition in that they are "a kind of hybrid between a farmers market, a traditional supermarket and a natural foods store," said Donna Egan, a Sprouts spokeswoman.
The Phoenix-based retailer has about 170 stores nationwide. This location also will feature some of the chain's newer offerings, such as an expanded deli section, made-to-order handmade sandwiches, gourmet cheeses and hand-rolled sushi, as well as new olive and soup bars, "that are really appealing to people who are pressed for time and looking to grab something to go," Egan said.
"Ultimately, at Sprouts, it all comes down to healthy living for less," she said. "What differentiates us from other markets is that we offer healthy products at a price point that the average consumer can relate to."
