MARTINEZ -- The city is holding public workshops this month on a proposed ban on single-use plastic bags at retail stores and restaurants.
The City Council is scheduled to discuss the ordinance at its June 4 meeting. If council members approve the ban, it would go into effect Sept. 1.
The city is holding two public workshops on May 28 to answer questions about the proposed ordinance. The session for business owners is at 8:30 a.m. and residents are invited to the second workshop at 6:30 p.m. Both meetings will be held in the council chambers at City Hall, 525 Henrietta St.
Martinez recently bought 3,000 reusable shopping bags to promote the proposed plastic ban. About half of the bags will be handed out to parents during open house events May 21st at John Muir and Las Juntas elementary schools and May 22 at Martinez Junior High School.
