CONCORD -- A wild race for the East Bay Athletic League baseball championship is over -- sort of.

De La Salle High claimed at least a part of the league title with its 13-6 romp over visiting California in Thursday's regular season finale.

But the Spartans could have to share it with as many as two other teams. If San Ramon Valley and Amador Valley both win Friday, all three will be co-champions with 9-5 EBAL records.

"It makes you a better coach, a better player, a better team," De La Salle coach David Jeans said of playing in the EBAL. "You can't take anything for granted. You're sitting there and you have an eight run lead and you're worried sick that the other guys are going to come back."

Cal (17-7, 8-6 EBAL) also had a chance to claim part of the EBAL title with a win Thursday, but couldn't cool off De La Salle's hot bats early in the game.

Michael McAdoo ignited five-run rallies in the second and third innings as the Spartans took a commanding 10-0 lead.

Austin Dondanville had a two-run double in the second inning, and De La Salle scored three times in the third before Cal was able to record an out. The Spartans (17-7) added on in the third when Dondanville laid down a squeeze bunt and two runners managed to score on the play.

"The hitting was definitely contagious," Dondanville said. "I think we had a little more energy in the dugout. We came out with some fire. It was a good day."

Left-handed starter Justin Hooper was dominant for De La Salle through three innings before struggling a bit with his command in the fourth. He still earned the win, striking out six in four-plus innings while touching 94 miles per hour on the radar gun.

Cal (17-7, 8-6 EBAL) got two runs off Hooper on Jake Ackerman's single in the fourth. The Grizzlies added single runs in the fifth and sixth, but saw the deficit grow again in the top of the seventh when De La Salle first baseman Chris Williams belted a two-run homer and Myles Coston added a RBI single.

Austin Chauvin's double in the bottom of the seventh plated the final two runs of the day for Cal.

De La Salle finished with 15 hits. McAdoo had three of them and scored three times.
