CONCORD -- The College Park High baseball team carved out two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday and Joe DeMers retired 13 of the last 14 batters as the Falcons won the inaugural Diablo Valley Athletic League tournament championship game, 3-1 over Clayton Valley Charter at Concord High.
DeMers (10-2) allowed four hits, struck out four and did not walk a batter in pitching his sixth complete game of the season.
After singles by Brendon Chellew and Ethan Cook to open the sixth for College Park, Nick Oar bunted pinch-runner A'Mari Baltimore to third, and he scored on a passed ball to break a 1-1 tie. Chris Brown then drilled a single to center off Gabe Taylor (8-1) to drive in Cook.
"We had momentum on our side," DeMers said. "We were just going to try to get a run and then get three outs."
The Eagles (22-4) scored one run in the third inning on doubles by John Allen and Garrett Nelson and a 1-0 lead.
"We knew we were going to come back because we always do," DeMers said. "We came back strong in the end."
Clayton Valley starting pitcher Grant Meylan struggled with his control, walking five batters before being lifted in favor of Gabe Taylor in the fourth inning.
"Meylan hasn't pitched that much, but Taylor had trouble throwing strikes against us last time, too," College Park coach Andy Tarpley said. "In a game like this, things tend to speed up and you end up throwing pitches up in the zone."
Clayton Valley kept the game close with a five innings of strong defense. Jesse Ladd in left robbed left-hand hitting College Park's Mike Lopes of a possible RBI double with a diving catch in the fourth, followed by third baseman Brandon Truesdell's backhanded stop of Scott Hroza's smash for the third out.
But that came after two errors and two walks allowed College Park to tie game 1-1 in the bottom of the third.
"Our guy threw a little better strikes than their staff did, and we were able to execute, and that provided runs for us," Tarpley said. "And we played clutch catch behind Joe."
