CASTRO VALLEY -- Sophomore Delaney Heller threw six innings of shutout relief as the host Castro Valley High softball team moved on to the North Coast Section Division I quarterfinals for the fourth year in a row with an 8-2 first-round victory over Freedom on Wednesday.

Freedom (14-8-2) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Adrienne Davenport ripped a two-run double to left field. But Heller, who had not pitched since May 2 for the Trojans due to a sprained ankle, entered at the beginning of the second inning and retired nine straight batters. She allowed only four hits and struck out five batters for her ninth win in 11 decisions.

"She's very poised," Castro Valley coach Marie Gray said.

Traci Shaw, also a sophomore, started the Trojans' comeback with a solo home run over the right field-center field fence to lead off the bottom of the second inning.

"I was just going up there looking for solid contact," said Shaw, who was 2 for 3 in the game.

Marya Ornelas also drove in a run in the second inning for Castro Valley, and RBI singles by Tailor Goods and Alana Guzman were part of a three-run uprising by the Trojans in the third inning. Goods, who was 2 for 2 in the game, also hit a run-scoring single in the fifth inning and Ornelas added an RBI groundout in the sixth. Besides Shaw and Goods, Yazmine Romero and Allison Decker also had two hits for the Trojans.

Davenport was 2 for 4 with two doubles for the Falcons. For the first time since at least 1999, Freedom did not advance to an NCS quarterfinal softball playoff game.
