MORAGA -- Zoe Conley pitched a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts to lead the top-seeded Salesian High softball team to a 2-0 win over St. Patrick-St. Vincent on Saturday in the North Coast Section Division IV championship at Saint Mary's College.
It's the Pride's second straight NCS title and its third overall.
Catcher Madison Pozzi went 3 for 3, including an RBI single in the first inning when Salesian (18-1) scored both of its runs. Pozzi's chopper over third base scored Skye Salas, and Mariah Schuchart followed with a sacrifice fly to score Meghan Bradbury.
"We needed to jump on them right away because we might not get another chance," Salesian coach Dolores Bonds said. "They're that good."
But with Conley, a senior headed to CSU Northridge, in the circle, Salesian didn't need to score again.
Though St. Pat's knew Conley well -- the final marked the fourth time the Tri-County Athletic League rivals played this year -- she kept the Bruins off the basepaths for the most part.
Conley, who is only 5-foot-2 but throws in the 60's, got into the most trouble in the top of the seventh. A pair of errors put runners on base with just one out, but a groundout to second and a flyball tracked down by right fielder Lysette Zaragoza ended the game.
"They know what I have so I have to keep working," Conley said of St. Pat's. "I had to mix it up and keep them off balance."
Salesian also beat the Bruins (24-7) in last year's NCS championship game.
The Bruins were responsible for Salesian's lone loss of the season, a 7-5 defeat way back on March 21.
But since then, Conley and the Pride have been extremely tough to score on. The four-year starting pitcher allowed just one run in seven games in May as Salesian outscored its playoff opponents 12-1.
