MARTINEZ -- Murder charges were filed Thursday against a Richmond woman and her male accomplice who prosecutors allege murdered the woman's estranged husband over a months-long child custody dispute.
In addition to murder, Alicia Ortez was charged with possession of methamphetamine for sale, and with taking children in violation of a custody order. Amador Ortiz, believed to be Ortez's boyfriend, is charged with using a shotgun and stealing the car he and Ortez used to drive to the San Pablo residence of victim Oscar Anguiano.
According to Deputy District Attorney Mary Knox, Anguiano had recently been awarded custody of his and Ortez's children, aged 12, 6 and 2. Knox said at least one person said they heard Ortez, after losing custody, threaten to kill herself and the kids. On another occasion, Ortez threated to kill Anguiano, against whom she was granted a restraining order in November.
Ortez and Ortiz drove to Anguiano's home Sunday night. Knox said witnesses heard shouting involving two men and a woman, and then two shotgun blasts. Anguiano was found dead outside his residence Monday morning. The California Highway Patrol issued a statewide Amber Alert for the missing children Monday evening, canceled a few hours later when Ortez, her children and Ortiz were found at the Richmond house of Ortiz's parents.
Inside the house investigators discovered a shotgun, shotgun shells, bloody clothing and two pool cue bags modified to carry shotguns, Knox said.
Ortez and Ortiz are expected to be arraigned in Richmond Friday afternoon. Bail for Ortez is set at $1.13 million, and at $2.13 million for Ortiz.
