OAKLAND -- A 64-year-old man was shot in the shoulder Tuesday afternoon during an attempted robbery in West Oakland, police said.

He was taken to a hospital where he was undergoing surgery. His condition was not available.

The shooting happened about 1:51 p.m. in the 1500 block of Linden Street. At least two suspects were involved. It was not immediately known if the man was shot because he resisted or for some other reason.

The gunman was described as black, in his 30s, about 5-foot-8 and 180 pounds, with a medium-to-dark complexion. He was wearing a brown coat.

The suspects were last seen running southbound on Linden Street.
