OAKLAND -- A one-alarm house fire Thursday morning in the Oakland hills below Highway 13 was controlled in 30 minutes but left two residents displaced, officials said.

The fire erupted about 9:19 a.m. at the two-story home in the 1800 block of Brentwood Road, near the intersection of Melvin Road east of Dimond Canyon.

The blaze started in the closet of a rear bedroom due to an electrical malfunction, officials said.

The couple who live there escaped to safety on their own.

Battalion Fire Chief James Bowron said the fire was controlled at 9:49 a.m. by 22 firefighters. None of them were injured.

Bowron estimated damage from the fire to be at least $40,000 and said the residents were being assisted by the Red Cross to find temporary housing.
