ANTIOCH -- Wanted: Local groups, organizations and clubs looking to make Antioch a quality place to play and live.
Bringing Antioch's plethora of groups together to share ideas to improve Antioch is the goal of organizers of a community barbecue and brainstorming session being held later this month.
The United Antioch event is at 4 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Deer Valley High School parking lot, 4703 Lone Tree Way.
Event organizer Ken Turnage said he stumbled upon the idea after seeing different groups focused on their own niche interests such as education, commerce or cleaning up illegal dumping.
"Everybody sees things that are important to them. But, if we can get those groups sharing ideas and going on a similar tangent, there's a better chance of fixing all the items," said Turnage, a Pittsburg resident who owns a business and grew up in Antioch.
Antioch has reached an "impassable crossroads" as far as public safety, crime and other neighborhood issues, he said.
"Whatever it is that's offending you, we shouldn't be pointing the finger at anyone but ourselves for allowing it to happen," Turnage said. "There are way too many issues to singling any (one) out."
The meeting will include an issue and suggestion box for everyone to write down what's on their mind upon arrival. After the meal, there will be a small group and larger group discussion about the topics submitted.
At the end, key points raised by the discussions will be presented to the appropriate city leaders as "rational solutions."
"At the bare minimum, those in office or running for office will see what we want, as a cumulative," Turnage said. "If we can make little changes on 30 items, that can make a difference."
There will be rules to the event: Keep the discussion positive. No racial or slanderous comments. No acting in a threatening or confrontational manner. And, no politics.
A volunteer meeting will be held 7 p.m. Monday. For more information, call Turnage at 925-250-0400 or check out the United Antioch group page on Facebook.
