EL CERRITO -- The decision of an incumbent council member not to seek re-election has resulted in an extension of the deadline for prospective candidates to file for the City Council election in November, the city announced Friday. Interested non-incumbents now have until 4 p.m. Wednesday to file papers with City Clerk Cheryl Morse at City Hall 10890 San Pablo Ave.
Rebecca Benassini, one of two incumbents with seats going before voters on Nov. 4, did not file to run again by the original deadline Friday, triggering the extension. Two candidates did file by the deadline, Mayor Janet Abelson and local political activist Gabriel Quinto.
Information about running for the council and requirements to qualify for the Nov. 4 ballot, as well as a list of those who have returned nomination papers, are available at the City Clerk's office, calling 510-215—4305, or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
