MARTINEZ -- A Pinole man charged in the shooting death of a romantic rival pleaded not guilty to murder at his arraignment Wednesday.

Prosecutors say Michael McQueen, 28, shot and killed Pinole resident Nicholas Callen, 24, in Tara Hills on March 31 in part because Callen was dating his former girlfriend.

McQueen was held for trial after a preliminary hearing in July after which his co-defendant, Kyle Navarro, was released based on his mother's testimony. McQueen's next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 8.
