SAN RAMON -- The Planning Commission is holding a public hearing on a proposed Walgreens store in the Windemere community on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. at the City Council chamber, 2222 Camino Ramon.

Walnut Creek-based Browman Development Co. hopes to construct a 14,409-square-foot Walgreens store at the northwest corner of Windemere Parkway and Bollinger Canyon Road, on a 1.24-acre site that houses a now-shuttered 2,160-square-foot Windemere Welcome Home Center.

Browman also is asking the city whether it can use a portion of the adjacent public right-of-way on Bollinger Canyon Road to help to build a proper-sized parking lot of 49 spaces.

About 100 petition signatures opposing the project have been gathered so far by residents in the Ambridge and Canyon Oaks communities, who say that the store would be the only retail business in the area, disrupting the character of the residential neighborhood and increasing crime and traffic there.

All residents within 300 feet of the proposed business were sent notices of the hearing date 10 days in advance so they can attend, according to the city's planning division.
