TARA HILLS -- The Community Emergency Response Team of Tara Hills Mobile Manor will host its second annual Family Safety Fair Saturday. The public is invited to the free event from 10 a.m. to about 1:30 p.m. at Tara Hills Mobile Manor, located off Tara Hills Drive west of San Pablo Avenue.
Speakers will include representatives of Pacific Gas & Electric Co. and the Phillips 66 petroleum refinery, as well as local licensed general contractor Sigurd "Sandy" Szerlip, who has more than 30 years of experience working in homes and businesses, said Karen Sogge, the CERT team's procurement officer.
The PG&E rep will teach how to turn off individual gas meters in an emergency, and talk about what can happen with a downed power line.
The Phillips 66 rep will talk about protective action for any hazardous chemical or refinery incidents, including procedures for sheltering in place.
Szerlip will talk about hazard mitigation that can be performed before disaster strikes to reduce injuries and property damage, and about ways to reduce risks due to falling objects, falls, electrical hazards, and fires.
The Tara Hills Mobile Manor Neighborhood Watch and Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office will have informational tables, Sogge said.
