MARTINEZ -- A Bay Point man who killed his friend over a woman and led police on an hourlong chase in a bright yellow Ford Escape was sentenced to 21 years in prison Thursday.
Prudencio Rubio, 33, took a deal from prosecutors and pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter with use of a gun for fatally shooting 35-year-old Hector Sanchez, of Pittsburg, in Rubio's home on Aug. 11, 2010.
Attorneys say Rubio and Sanchez, friends who dealt and used methamphetamine together, were at odds over a woman.
Prosecutor Molly Manoukian said her office offered Rubio a plea deal because he had a strong self-defense claim; the victim had sent him a threatening text message before the killing.
Rubio led Contra Costa County authorities on a wild, high-speed chase that spanned 60 miles and ended back in front of his home, where he was taken into custody after threatening to shoot himself in the head.
