DANVILLE -- Seasoned and novice cyclists alike are invited to compete for prizes and raise money for land conservation efforts by signing up for Save Mount Diablo's 42nd Annual Mount Diablo Challenge, held this year on Oct. 6.
About 1,000 cycling enthusiasts are expected to enter either the 11.2-mile timed ride -- which climbs 3,249 feet to Mount Diablo's summit -- or the shorter 6.5-mile ride with a 1,578 foot elevation gain. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Athenian School, 2100 Alameda Diablo in Danville, and will be followed by a family-friendly party at the mountain's summit. Proceeds from the event will go to benefit Save Mount Diablo.
The cost to run the full course is $75 before Sept.16 and $90 after. Prices for the half-course are $45 before Sept. 16 and $60 after. Registration ends Oct. 3.
