BERKELEY -- Led by the rushing attack of Matt Rood and Zach Cribb, the Monte Vista High football team powered its way to a 20-6 nonleague win over host Berkeley on Friday night.

Rood reached paydirt twice for the Mustangs, and Cribb contributed a long touchdown run in the third quarter. Rood finished with 91 yards on 17 carries, and Cribb ran for 143 yards on 11 carries.

Monte Vista (1-1) put up 56 points in the season opener against Castro Valley, but lost by one. The Mustangs only needed 20 points to break into the win column against Berkeley (1-1).

Monte Vista struck first, on a 1-yard run by Rood in the second quarter. Rood added to the Mustangs' total after halftime, with another short touchdown jaunt. Shortly before the start of the fourth quarter, Cribb weaved through the Yellowjackets defense for a 35-yard scoring run.

Monte Vista quarterback Nikita Zamora finished 10-for-15 with 89 yards.

Berkeley quarterback Noah Suszckiwicz had a solid night in a losing effort, going 16-for-27 with 192 yards and one touchdown -- to Travis Dennis in the fourth quarter.

Dennis caught 6 passes for 78 yards.
