After winning very big in the first game, the host Cougars may have thought they were in for an easy time in a nonleague match with the Broncos.
The Cougars did win in three games, 25-9, 25-21 and 25-19, but it was anything but easy after cruising in the first.
"We got pushed and got a little complacent," Carondelet coach Jerry Mix said. "They kept fighting and we had to re-focus and finish and it was nice to see we did."
The Cougars (7-1) did not lead in the second game until finally getting on top 16-15 and eventually pulled away. They scored three straight points to make the score 24-20, thanks to a big block by Allison Barry and a kill by Haley Rivera.
Northgate (2-6) didn't quit, building leads of 4-1 and 10-6 in the third game behind an attack that saw Kelly Markham tally three early kills.
However, behind a balanced attack that saw nine different players tally a kill, Carondelet pulled away after tying the game at 14-14.
