Pittsburg runs over Monte Vista

  • The Pittsburg High football team picked up its second straight win on Sept. 13, beating host Monte Vista 49-29. Harris Ross had a game for the ages, rushing for seven touchdowns and a school and North Coast Section record 464 yards. During a devastating second half, he scored six touchdowns and ran for 361 yards on only 10 carries. The week before, Ross had 233 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-33 win over California, meaning the Pirates (2-1) have won two in a row against perennial East Bay Athletic League stalwarts.

    Deer Valley gets past College Park

  • The Deer Valley football team improved to 2-0 with a 49-18 nonleague win over College Park on Sept. 13 at Diablo Valley College. Nsimba and Nzuzi Webster combined for four touchdowns in the victory, as the Wolverines scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to take a 28-6 lead at halftime.

    Los Medanos rebounds with big win

  • After a disappointing 41-7 loss to Hartnell in its first game, the Los Medanos College football team responded with a 26-3 win over Cabrillo on Sept. 14. The Mustangs had no problem running the ball, as Shawn Vasquez ran for 183 yards and two touchdowns. Los Medanos broke the game open on a 59-yard touchdown run by Vasquez of Liberty High late in the third quarter to make it 20-3. The big play came after the stingy Mustangs defense held Cabrillo on downs for the second straight time.

    Pittsburg tennis off to a strong start

  • On Sept. 16, the Pittsburg girls tennis team handed Antioch a 6-1 loss in their last nonleague match before Bay Valley Athletic League play starts. With the win, the Pirates improved to 4-1 on the season.

  • Pittsburg at Berkeley, football, Sept. 20, 7 p.m. -- In a game between NCS Division I schools, the Pirates travel to Berkeley to face a hungry Yellowjackets squad that has lost their last two games.

  • De La Salle/Carondelet Nike Invitational, cross country, Sept. 21, 11:15 a.m. -- Some of the area's top runners will compete on the 3.0-mile Newhall Park course.

  • Los Medanos at Sequoias, football, Sept. 21, 7 p.m. -- The Mustangs (1-1) look to continue their momentum when they travel to face an undefeated College of the Sequoias (2-0).

  • Harris Ross, Pittsburg, football -- Ross set an NCS record rushing against Monte Vista. Ross had 464 yards on 21 carries and found paydirt seven times in Pittsburg's win over Monte Vista.

  • Shawn Vasquez, Los Medanos, football -- Vasquez racked up 183 yards on the ground and had two touchdowns, including a 59 yard touchdown run, in a much needed 26-3 victory over Cabrillo.

  • Nsimba Webster, Deer Valley, football -- Webster got Deer Valley off to a strong start against College Park, scoring three first half touchdowns. He ran for 84 yards and passed for 189.
