Oakland Stroke' varsity women's rowing team returned with a boatload of gold medals from the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, which took place in Saint Catharines, Ontario, Canada in August.
Of the 21 events they entered, Oakland Strokes boats reached six finals, and won three of them:
The Canadian Henley Regatta is one of the largest rowing tournaments in North America and boasts a 131- year tradition of summer competition. Over 2,800 men and women from over 150 rowing clubs competed for Henley Gold.
"We entered our Varsity Women to compete at Canadian Henley this summer so they could stay sharp over the summer, and also have the opportunity to test themselves against a very high level of international competition," said Teresa Guthrie, varsity girls' coach. "Getting to the finals at Henley is a challenging goal for any rower and winning gold is a real accomplishment. There is no other rowing event quite like this one, where over a six day regatta, the girls get to row in a variety of events, both small boats and big boats, in sculling events and sweep events. Everyone had an opportunity to participate in multiple heats and finals."
The Oakland Strokes took gold in Senior Lightweight Women's Dash 8+, Under 23 Lightweight Women's 8+ and Under 19 Women's 8+.
Between the three boats, seventeen athletes won a total of 27 gold medals. Both the medal winners and their fellow teammates all agreed that the nine day trip to Canada was the highlight of their summer, and a memory they will keep forever.
