HAYWARD -- The Chabot College football team scored 40 points in the first half and went on to a 64-24 nonconference home win over Cabrillo on a chilly Saturday night.
Chabot had 256 yards rushing and 284 yards passing as it won its second straight game and improved to 3-2 overall. Cabrillo dropped to 1-4.
Chabot quarterback Zach Lujan completed 11 of 13 passes with a touchdown and no interceptions. Demariay Moody was his favorite target, as he had 104 yards on five receptions, including a 53-yard touchdown. Jayden Rose got it done on the ground for Chabot, rushing for two scores on 95 yards.
Cabrillo's freshman quarterback, Brandon Layne, shined after he came into the game early in the first quarter. Replacing Lucas Romanski, who left the game with an injury after taking only two snaps, Layne completed 22 of 39 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Payne also ran for 46 yards on several scrambles.
Cabrillo's leading receiver was Yoshio Hasegawa, who caught 10 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown.
Chabot (3-2) starts Golden Gate Conference play next week at Merced. Cabrillo plays San Jose City next week in its first Coast Conference game.
