BYRON -- A 60-year-old Antioch man was killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash off a rural road in the southeast outskirts of Contra Costa County early Sunday morning.
East Contra Costa Fire Protection District crews and California Highway Patrol officers responded to the crash, which occurred at 12:01 a.m. Sunday off Byron Highway north of Holey Road.
The pick-up truck was headed northbound on the highway when the driver "failed to negotiate an 'S-curve' and lost control of the vehicle," CHP officer Frank Meranda said. The truck left the roadway and turned over a few times, he said.
The driver, identified by the Contra Costa Coroner's office Monday as James Etchells, was partially ejected from the vehicle, though he was wearing a seat belt. Etchells was pronounced dead on scene.
A second victim was flown to John Muir Medical Center after sustaining minor lacerations and has since been discharged, Meranda said.
The CHP is investigating the incident.
