WALNUT CREEK -- Petitions for two ballot initiatives backed by a city councilman will soon be circulating on the streets.
One initiative brought forward by City Councilman Justin Wedel would undo part of the city's recently passed secondhand-smoke ordinance, which prohibits smoking in multifamily homes. The other initiative would block the City Council from banning plastic shopping bags.
Wedel received the ballot title and summary from the city attorney earlier this week; now, a notice must be printed in the newspaper, and then he plans to begin collecting signatures on Friday, he said.
Wedel will need to gather more than 4,000 signatures to get the initiatives on the ballot, and hopes both initiatives will go before voters in June. Wedel has 180 days to collect the signatures, and says he has people willing to help gather them, some of whom are part of his new group, Speak Up for Walnut Creek.
