CONCORD -- First-year De La Salle High football coach Justin Alumbaugh got his first career playoff win with a 46-0 rout of visiting Granada in the North Coast Section Division I quarterfinals on Friday.

The top-seeded Spartans (11-0), who had a bye in the first round, opened up a 46-0 halftime lead over No. 8 Granada (7-5), in a game with a running clock in the second half.

De La Salle, which has won 21 consecutive NCS titles, will host Deer Valley in the semifinals on Friday.

John Velasco ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries as the overpowering Spartans rushed for 434 yards.

Despite the lopsided score, Alumbaugh saw room for improvement. The Spartans started awkwardly, fumbling the ball away on a basic toss play out of the option on their first possession. They were forced to punt on their second possession. But an interception and 25-yard return by the Spartans' Kevin Griffin set up a 25-yard scoring run by quarterback Chris Williams.

The Matadors fumbled it right back on their next possession, and sophomore Antoine Custer scored the first of back-to-back touchdowns on a 16-yard run. The Spartans concluded a devastating first half with a 76-yard scoring run by Anthony Sweeney.

Alumbaugh thought his team looked a little rusty after a week off.

"Overall, I thought we did a good job," Alumbaugh said. "Granada coming in, they had a good season, and so it was a pretty good first half. I just didn't really like how we started."

Granada coach Tim Silva had nothing but praise for his players. The Matadors achieved their goal by making the playoffs for the first time since 2010, and then won a 24-20 thriller over Amador Valley in the first round.

Matadors senior Joshua Revay had a solid game with five receptions and 52 yards.

"We thought for the first half of the first quarter it was happening the way we needed it to, but we turned the ball over," Silva said, "and they just laid it on us."
