CONCORD -- Danny Mahoney scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help lead the Serra High basketball team to a 52-39 win over host De La Salle in the championship game of the Chris Vontoure Spartan Classic on Saturday.
The Padres (3-0) used a 20-12 second quarter to take the lead for good. Key to Serra's run -- and the entire game -- was the 3-pointer. The Padres made them in the second quarter and the Spartans couldn't make them all night. De La Salle (2-1) finished two of 12 from long range.
"They have a great program, a well-respected program," Mahoney said after being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. "We had the mentality coming into this tournament that we're sort of an underdog this year and no matter what anybody says about us, we're going to keep fighting."
The teams played a close first quarter, with Serra holding an 8-7 edge at the break. Then, the Padres got hot, hitting five of eight 3-pointers in the second period. An 8-0 run broke a 13-13 tie with Sean Watkins and Jimmy Wohrer each hitting a 3 during the run.
De La Salle, meantime, struggled on offense, with Jordan Ratinho the only consistent scorer. He finished with 15 points.
The Spartans never lost touch and after Jordan Sisneros opened the fourth quarter with a basket, De La Salle was down 37-30. But Serra had an answer and quickly pushed the lead back up to 42-30 by midway through the period.
Watkins added 14 points for the Padres and Wohrer finished with 11.
