MARTINEZ -- Ribbing over losing a pool game to a woman sparked a deadly attack at an Antioch bowling alley last month, a prosecutor says.

The Contra Costa District Attorney's Office has charged 24-year-old Andre Woods with murder for allegedly bludgeoning Vallejo resident Kelvin Smith to death with a bar stool on Dec. 20 at Delta Bowl on Delta Fair Boulevard in Antioch.

The two men did not know each other before Smith teased Woods about losing a game of pool to a woman, prosecutor Mary Knox said. After some shoving back and forth, Woods knocked Smith to the ground by throwing a bar stool at him.

Woods then picked up a second bar stool and used it to repeatedly hit Smith in the head and face, Knox said. Smith died that night from severe head injuries.

Woods, a Pittsburg resident, turned himself in to Antioch police the next day. He was arraigned Dec. 27 but did not enter a plea. He returns to court on Thursday for further arraignment. His bail is over $1 million.
