Officers were called to the 1700 block of Chandon Way at 11:40 a.m. to take custody of the stabbing suspect, who had been restrained by neighbors, police Sgt. D.J. Watts said. Petterle, an Oakley resident, had argued with another man, then pulled out a knife and stabbed the man in the side, police said. The victim was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek where he was treated and released.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for injuries — bruises and cuts from punches — suffered when a group of neighbors subdued him, Watts said.

Petterle was booked into the county jail in Martinez on three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, Watts said. On Sunday afternoon, Petterle was no longer in custody.
