OAKLAND -- Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting Friday night they say occurred after a driver tried to run over a woman with a car.
Nobody was injured in the gunfire, police said, but the man driving the car was taken to a hospital after colliding with a parked police car. The driver was later arrested.
Two uniformed officers were in the area of 7th and Clay streets around 6:09 p.m. regarding another matter when they observed the unidentified woman running toward them waving her arms, police said. She appeared to be running from a vehicle that left the roadway behind her in what police said was a deliberate attempt to run her over.
One officer responded by firing his gun, and the driver collided with the parked police car. Police did not say in which direction the gun was fired, nor did they identify the driver or the make of the car.
The Oakland police major crimes unit and internal affairs division began independent investigations into the circumstances of the shooting, per department policy following the use of potentially lethal force by an officer.
