OAKLAND -- A 27-year-old man accused of beating his longtime companion to death pleaded not guilty Monday to a charge of murder.
Dominic Daniel was charged last month to one count of murder for allegedly killing Tsega Tesfoy Tsegay, 33, in what police described as a brutal beating that left the couple covered in blood.
Police arrested Daniel on July 31 after officers responded to an emergency call from a witness who allegedly saw Daniel pulling Tsegay from Lake Merritt at about 6 a.m. A police report describes officers arriving at the scene and noticing Daniel covered in blood.
Tsegay was also found on the ground covered in blood. Witnesses and paramedics performed CPR on Tsegay before she was transported to Highland Hospital where she died later in the day.
Daniel was taken to the Oakland Police Department where, during an interrogation, he confessed to the crime, court records state.
Daniel, who was on probation for a previous domestic violence case at the time of the alleged murder, is scheduled to appear in court again in October for a pretrial hearing.
