WALNUT CREEK-- A Walnut Creek jewelry store was robbed of tens of thousands of dollars' worth of Rolex watches Tuesday afternoon by two men who sprayed employees with pepper spray and smashed cases with a sledgehammer, police said.

Officers arrived at the Davidson & Licht jewelry store at 1258 Broadway Plaza at 2:28 p.m. after reports that it was being robbed, Walnut Creek Police Lt. Lanny Edwards said.

Witnesses said that the two suspects came into the store and that one of them began pepper-spraying employees while the other smashed display cabinets with a sledgehammer.

The two men were in the store for less than 60 seconds and ran northbound on Broadway Plaza to a waiting SUV, police said. They made off with at least half a dozen Rolex watches.

One customer and several employees were in the store at the time of the robbery, and were not injured by either of the weapons, Edwards said. Store managers at Davidson & Licht declined to comment Tuesday afternoon.

The man with the pepper spray was described as being in his 20s, about 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build. He was wearing a white hoodie sweatshirt, blue jeans, black and white sneakers, a black beanie and gloves. The man armed with the sledgehammer was described as being of the same age, build and height, but was wearing a black hoodie sweatshirt, gray cargo pants, black and white sneakers and gloves. Their races were unknown, police said.
