PALO ALTO -- A man in his fifties fought off a would-be robber armed with a handgun Friday night, police said.
The incident was reported about 8:24 p.m. near a parking garage at 520 Webster Street. The man told police that the man was walking on a path near the garage when the suspect, who was riding a bicycle, approached him.
The suspect pulled a gun and demanded cash, but the victim grabbed his arm and the two fell to the ground, struggling over the gun. The victim was unable to get the gun away from the suspect, but ran away without handing over any of his property.
The suspect did not give chase, and the victim was not injured.
The victim described the suspect as a black male, between 25 and 30, weighing between 160 and 170 pounds. He was wearing a bulky, burnt orange jacket and a dark watch cap, and riding a brown cruiser-style bicycle.
Detectives are investigating the robbery, and working to see if there is any connection to three previous armed robberies in Palo Alto in the last month.
