PLEASANTON -- Police arrested two men suspected of stealing a resident's $2,500 bicycle then speeding away in a van at 80 mph, authorities said.
Jason Medeiros, 46, of Dublin, and Jesse Nieto, 45, of Hayward, were arrested on suspicion of burglary Wednesday after police responding to the reported bike theft spotted their blue getaway van speeding through the residential area west of Stoneridge Mall, Lt. Jim Knox said. Officers arrived at the 9000 block of Klemetson Street at 1:05 p.m. after a resident reported she had just caught one of the men, later identified as Nieto, stealing her Specialized bike from her open garage, Knox said.
After she spotted him, the man snatched up the bike and put it in the van, where Medeiros was waiting and the two promptly left the neighborhood. Police located them at 1:12 p.m., driving 80 mph in a 40 mph zone on Dublin Canyon Road, Knox said. Officers pulled them over at Dublin Canyon and Canyon Creek Drive and while talking to the suspects, spotted a bicycle in the back of the van, which the men said belonged to them.
Officers then called the victim and asked her to come to the scene. According to Knox, the victim arrived and identified Medeiros as the driver and Nieto as the man in her garage but said that the bike was not hers.
After a brief search of the area, officers found the woman's bike stashed in some bushes near Blessing Drive and Laurel Creek Drive, Knox said. The bicycle found in the men's van had not been reported stolen.
Both Medeiros and Nieto were taken to Santa Rita Jail, where they posted bail, Knox said. Medeiros was also arrested for a parole violation.
According to Knox, officers confiscated additional property from their van that could possibly be related to other cases in the area. The bicycle in question was returned to its owner.
