A Berkeley man hit by a vehicle while walking on University Avenue on Tuesday was in critical condition Wednesday morning, police said.

Rescue workers were called to 10th Street and University Avenue at 8:23 p.m. and found a man injured. Berkeley fire crews worked on the man, who was taken to an undisclosed hospital via ambulance, said Berkeley police Officer Jennifer Coats, the agency's spokeswoman.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, she said. It was too early to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.

Berkeley police closed down a stretch of University Avenue while members of its fatal accident investigation team pored over the scene, Coats said. Anyone with information on the collision is urged to call the Berkeley Police Traffic Bureau at 510-981-5980
